How Much Money Do I Need For Thailand

How Much Money Do I Need For Thailand?

Moving To Thailand

When preparing to move abroad there is s a lot you need to spend your money on, especially if you are in no way, shape, or form prepared for it. If you have alot of money, stop reading now. If you have to pave your own way in life then continue to read and find out how much money you really need for Thailand.

Back in 2012 my start up costs were so high - mainly because of a TEFL course. If you are going to Thailand to teach English I would recommend trying to find the cheapest TEFL course that you can.

Below is break down of my costs when I first went to Thailand. Bear in mind that the conversion rate of THB to GBP was different back in 2012.

Thailand Budget On Arrival

I've decided to put a break down of some of the costs that I've had to make:

  • TEFL Course £899
  • UK Passport, Check and Send, and Photo's £85
  • Thai Visa (2 entries) £50
  • Walk in to collect Visa, same day £10
  • Travel Insurance £300
  • Single Ticket to Thailand £420
  • Vaccinations, most free, Yellow Fever £50
  • Accommodation, 4 weeks Phuket by the sea £300
  • Grand Total: £2114

Note, I haven't even gone anywhere yet! This doesn't include, train fare's, bus fare's, or any other fare's which I needed to get around and do things. I think thats at least another £50.

Although you can't see it, i'm holding 1k, its not fanned out enough! First and last time i'll hold that kind of money in one shot.

Although I know I've seen tonnes of money vanish, it's for a good reason. Today, I've managed to get my Visa stamped, which hopefully means I won't have any trouble at the airport - if you don't have a visa before you travel to Thailand, you must make sure you already have a return ticket booked, otherwise they'll make you buy one at the airport!

I'm also in the middle of sorting my travelers cheques out, I withdrew 1k today to do this! But sadly, just as quick as it came to me, its gone again!

Nearly time to go now, hopefully Tuesday 9th October, providing everything's okay. On another note - I wrote an apology to the university of Wolverhampton on my blog yesterday, I take it back! They haven't even started on printing and sending me my new degree certificates and transcripts! They said they shall be arriving this week, after a phone call today, I realised they LIED.

14 Days and Counting.....Degree!

It seems like it's taking forever for the trip to happen. Things are starting to fall into place...
Above image, me studying for a degree!
I got my new passport 2 days ago! Woop! I thought something might have gone wrong with it, and I wouldn't get it but low and behold it arrived. There's nothing like a brand new gleaming passport to cheer yourself up! I look at it and think, I couldn't go anywhere without you, this little book will take me anywhere I want to go. And I can't wait. Woop a passport, how exciting. I'm going to try and refrain from using the word "woop" again.
There's a couple of thing's left for me to do, i need to learn the difference between a pro-noun and a noun for a start. Now I have my passport, I can apply for my visa to the Thai embassy. Once I have that I can book my flight's insurance and off I go...to a land far far away.
One thing that really frustrated me was that I lost my degree, and so I've had to apply for a new one. But it's costed an extra £55 for this thing! Be warned never lose your degree, you might just need it one day! The staff at the University of Wolverhampton, well they're annoying, its not their fault, but they are. I told this woman how it was really important that I get the degree really quickly, she didn't seem to grasp what I was saying. She just said there's a que and you'll have to wait ten days!!! I did say to her how important it was that I needed it quick, and kind of asked if it could be fast tracked. Apparently 70 other people who have applied, their's are very urgent too! I highly doubt it! 3 years paying for a degree, and then paying another £55, to get a copy, ridiculous! Still I can't complain as the students are paying £9000 a year to study at Wolverhampton!

Can I Teach In Thailand Without A Degree?

Passport Damage

Execute Your Plan And Get A New Passport Today

I've just checked my passport, and it looks like its been through the mill. I'm not sure whether to risk it or get a replacement passport. If I risk it I could end up not getting through border control and coming back to Coventry. Or if I don't risk it, then my journey will go swiftly with no problems! I'd rather go with the second option.

I've been looking at a lot of things to do with Thailand today including Tsunami's, which are quite frankly scary, but this won't stop me. Tomorrow I get my vaccine's i'll keep you updated on which are free and are needed for Phuket. Also found out that Thailand means the land of the free.
